MusicWorks is a joint research initiative between PPL and PRS for Music to demonstrate the positive effects of music and the benefits it can bring to businesses.

There have been six major research studies investigating how music affects both consumer and employee behaviour. The first two joint studies were conducted by Entertainment Media Research in 2009 and 2010, and the third by VisionCritical in 2012. in May 2013, PPL has conducted research into the travel sector to understand how playing in-store music can help to enhance the overall customer experience, as well as influencing purchasing behaviour, staff productivity and sales. It was conducted by RED who interviewed and surveyed customers and staff of a UK travel company. In June 2013, the agency DJS undertook a region-specific joint research project focusing on 600 businesses in the West Midlands (UK) area.
More recently, PPL and PRS for Music commissioned new scientific research to establish whether listening to music in the workplace improves speed and accuracy of tasks such as data entry, proof reading and problem solving skills. This research was conducted in September 2014, by Mindlab International on behalf of PPL and PRS for Music.

Under the Copyright, Designs and Patent Act 1988, if recorded music is played in public (including workplaces or staff-only areas) then in most instances the business will be legally required to be licensed by both PPL and PRS for Music.
Both organisations license the use of music and collect royalties for the music industry, but represent different rights holders and have separate licences. PPL collects and distributes money for the use of recorded music on behalf of record companies and performers, while PRS for Music collects and distributes money for the use of the musical composition and lyrics on behalf of authors, songwriters, composers and publishers.
